The Hashtag # or number, or pound sign is used in social media to identify a message. Twitter was the first to integrate hashtags as part of their social media. The first hashtag was made on Twitter by Technology Expert Chris Messina. The hashtag #barcamp was created in August in 2007 to create "groups" and has become a staple of Social Media.

Hashtags are a great way for businesses to convey their message. When made correctly (no spaces or characters) with numbers and letters a hashtag creates a link that makes your brand more noticed and easy to follow. For example Wow The Web, to further create website presence would be #wowtheweb also consider a more popular hashtag with your post which would automatically associate your post with it. As of this posting one of the most popular hashtags is #love. Whenever you include a popular hashtag make sure that it is relative to what you are posting and that it makes sense.

Hashtags can also be used to create followers, which in turn also makes your online presence stronger. Samples of this are #followme #follow and #follow4follow.
